The word E-learning / on-line itself didn’t exist until 1999. It was first used in a seminar about CBT systems, so you can imagine just how recent this phenomenon is. You may have heard E-learning with other names such as virtual learning or online learning, and it’s only recently started to make it into our everyday vocabulary.
So how did it start exactly? We can take E-learning right back to the mid 19th century, when training was being offered by Isaac Pittman through correspondence. What did he teach? He educated students shorthand, which was a type of symbolic writing that improved writing speed. It was mostly aimed at secretaries and university students who had to do mass amounts of note taking. Isaac Pittman would send his pupils assignments through the mail, and would grade them just like a normal teacher.
The first testing machine was invented in 1924, but in 1954 the “teaching machine’ was created. This allowed schools to dispense programmed instructions to students and schoolers through computers.
Fast forward a hundred years or so and the first computer based training computer program came into existence. It was developed for students at the University of Illinois but was also used by schoolers in the area. During this time, ARPANET is central to the internet and the invention of the computer mouse is introduced. All of these things increased ease and accessibility for one to reap the benefits of technology.
The 1980’s saw the first Mac, which allowed computers to become so much more versatile due to their ability to be transported to the home. This was a huge step for E-learning, because it meant that people could actually hone their skills and train themselves at home.
The early 2000’s experienced a boom in online training as electronic devices were widely available to the public. Now people were able to improve their knowledge through online degrees and the expansion of the internet offered a huge information boom.
In this Current era the e-education, e-training’s e.g. soft skills or/and professional skills development is needs to be available from the schoolers to CEOs based on micro-learning / nano-learning strategies on the palm of any one at anytime and anywhere.
